Collecting Pennies

In the past, pennies or coins are known as the pence. They reflect and represent the most famous and powerful figures in history. These include some of the world's greatest kings and queens, explorers, presidents, military leaders, dictators, war heroes, revolutionary men, famous athletes, saints, etc. This initiated the birth of a very interesting hobby - Collecting Pennies. It can create an album of notable notables; such as the likes of King Richard The Lion Heart and Queen Elizabeth of England, Ferdinand Magellan of Spain, Abraham Lincoln of the United State's, Julius Caesar of Rome and Alexander the Great of Greece, Jose Rizal of the Philippines, and Mao Tse Tong of China.

In the United State's, there are many kinds of collectible pennies. These are the Regular Issue Coins (the most obtainable among the collectors' item, example is the Lincoln Penny), Commemorative Coins (used to memorialize a very important event in the history, example is the 2001 Firefighter Memorial Silver Dollar), Proof Coins (characterize by its shiny look, example is the 2002 Winter Olympic Proof Coin), Bullion Coins (usually created from gold and/or other valuable metals, example is the American Gold Eagle), Pattern Coins (serves as the blueprint of all regular US pennies, example is the 1866 Pattern Nickel Coin), Error Coins (pennies with flaws and blemishes, example is the Sacajawea Dollar Mule Error), Ancient Coins (old and historical pennies which dates back as far as the B.C. era, example is the Ancient Greek Coin), and the Tokens/Medals (coin-like items with no commercial value, example is the 1863 Civil War Token).

Some of the most famous US coin collectibles include the Large Cent Draped Bust (1796-1807 circulation), Indian Head Cent (1859-1909 circulation), Lincoln Cent (1943 circulation), Five Cent Nickel Jefferson (1938 circulation), Dime Liberty Head (1892-1916 circulation), Half Dollar Flowing Hair (1794-1795 circulation), and the Quarter Bicentennial (1976 circulation).
